One of the most well-known and beautiful verses begins with such a sweet simple calling…Be Still. Just the sound of those words brings peace to my soul. Psalm 46:10 ìBe Still and Know I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.î
Friend, let’s go deeper beyond the message ìBe Stillî in search of the nuggets of gold that await us in this beautiful scripture.
What is the benefit or blessing of being still? How do we accomplish being still in the midst of this wonderfully, crazy, busy, Christmas holiday? And how does being still exalt Him among the nations and in the earth?
There is a beautiful promise nestled in chapter 46 of the Psalms and it begins in verse one with, ìGod is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.î The Psalmist goes on to make a bold declaration, ìTherefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea.î
How is it that I could not fear at the entire earth collapsing under me?! Or watching a mountain fall into the sea!î Shall we not fear?
I fear that I would fear, unless… unless I believed what the verses following and leading up to our sweet, simple, peaceful message whispered from the very lips of God, ìBe Stillî. And those verses explode with the authority of our all-powerful, extravagantly loving God and tells us HE is in the midst of it ALL!
The heavens raged, kingdoms were moved; He uttered His voice, the earth melted. This is who fights for us! The LORD of Hosts is with US! The God of Jacob is our refuge! Come, behold the works of the Lord. He makes wars to cease, breaks the enemy’s weapons, destroys the enemy’s tactics. Yes! That is WHO we want and have on our side! The victorious One!
These verses illuminate why we are to be still and the promised outcome of being still. BE STILL… He is our refuge and our strength! BE STILL… He is with you! BE STILL… and watch as He fights for you!
When our focus is on the wonderful, loving, almighty power of OUR God, then, and only then, we can be still and wait upon the LORD. We can BE STILL knowing the battles are not ours but His.
And WHEN we allow Him to fight our battles for us, He gets all the glory. And when He gets all the glory THEN, and only then, is HE exalted among the nations and in the earth. Not only does the battle belong to Him, ALL the glory belongs to Him, and rightly so.
The benefit of being still? He fights for us! How do we accomplish being still in the midst of this wonderfully, crazy, busy Christmas holiday? Maybe if we grab a cup of our favorite warm drink, snuggle beneath a cozy throw, clear our minds of all thoughts, and, for a moment, be still and ponder the limitless power of our God. Be still and know our God, who sees everything, knows everything, and can do anything, will fight in our behalf. He loves us with an everlasting love. He covers us with His wings.
And how does being still exalt Him among the nations and in the earth? Let’s allow Him to fight for us, be in jaw-dropping awe of Him, and share what He has done in our lives. HE WILL BE EXALTED AMONG THE NATIONS AND EXALTED IN ALL THE EARTH. BE STILL.
